fashion trends in London-anything but ordinary

My final project stems off the idea of “anything but ordinary” in London and studying abroad. I felt the need to depict images from London, which I truly believe are out of the ordinary and differ from the norm in the States. Throughout the 3 weeks I have been in London the fashion really intrigued me as well as the large presence of cigarette smoking among both men and women.

My inspiration for my images comes from two artists the first being Rineke Dijkstra. She is a photographer known for photographing men and women on simple backgrounds showing slight emotion. Her subjects are typically shown standing facing the camera; photographs are simple yet they are powerful.

A second photographer who inspired my photos is Lise Sarfati whose images we had seen at an exhibit at the V&A. Sarfati also photographed adolescents but in their natural environments. The background in her landscape photographs helps tell the story behind each individual. Sarfati’s subjects, however, do not face the camera or look straight at the camera lens.

I shot my subjects in portrait style with apertures ranging from 8 to 16. My shutter speed stayed constant at 1/60. Subjects in all of my photographs are standing still, looking at the camera and positioned in the middle of the composition. The images included in this blog exhibit a glance at fashion in London throughout my travels these past few weeks.
